Lorena Gonzalez Rescues Our Monthly Meeting!

Lorena Gonzalez
Lorena Gonzalez

Lorena Gonzalez, candidate for State Assembly, District 80, was the keynote speaker at Uptown Democratic Club’s March 26, 2013 monthly meeting.

Ms Gonzalez is well qualified to serve the people of Assembly District 80, which includes the City of San Diego’s neighborhoods of Golden Hill, Chollas View, Lincoln Park, Grant Hill, Barrio Logan, Palm City, Nestor, San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, the Western 2/3 of the City of National City and the Western half of the City of Chula Vista.

She is a graduate of Vista HS and a graduate of Stanford University in California. She served as a policy advisor to California’s Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante and as an alternate member of the Coastal Commission. For a complete bio, see Ms Gonzalez’s web site

Ms Gonzalez spoke eloquently and with seasoned knowledge on a variety of topics of interest to people not only in the district, but to folks in San Diego County in general, and fielded questions.

The sequence of events leading to this special election is as follows:

  • State Senator Juan Vargas, SD40, was elected to Congress on November 6, 2012 in the middle of his 4-year term
  • That triggered a special election on March 12, 2013 to replace him as Senator
  • State Assemblyman Ben Hueso won that special election with 53% of the vote, avoiding a runoff
  • That triggered a special election on July 30, 2013 to replace him as Assemblymember

Incidentally, Ms Gonzalez received a phone call just before she was to speak at the Uptown Democratic Club meeting notifying her that the date of the primary had just been set for May 21, 2013. She was then able to relay the information to the club members assembled.

Ironically, Ms Gonzalez’s opponent in the race, former Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Castaneda was to be our keynote speaker, but he had to cancel at the last minute (6:30 PM, meeting time 7:30 PM) because his wife was not able to pick up the kids so he had to. The fact that Ms Gonzalez was able to substitute for Mr. Castaneda on such short notice is likely indicative of how responsive she would be to her constituents while serving as an assemblymember.

Apr 23, 2013 – Uptown Democratic Club Meeting

A representative of Kevin Beiser, our incumbent member of the San Diego Unified School Board, District B, will be asking for our endorsement for re-election in 2014.

News: The La Jolla Democratic Club endorsed Kevin Beiser for re-election at their monthly meeting on Sunday, April 21, in La Jolla. The vote was unanimous.

We will also be considering whether or not to endorse a candidate in the May 21 special election to fill the vacancy in the 80th Assembly District. The candidates are former Chula Vista City Councilmember Steve Casteneda and Labor Council President Lorena Gonzalez.

Information from Ms. Gonzalez’s campaign staff of interest to Democratic Club Members:
Steve was a Republican until 2008 when he changed parties because he was running against another Republican and it was the Obama year. He was actually a delegate to the 2000 Republican National Convention for George W. Bush.
